“Try it now!” shouted Tegan from the upper deck of the large engineering room. She had just reset the ship board chronometer, “OK, setting date and time to current standard,” Lana said as she lay on her back under a large control station in the centre of the room. “Right, time and date has been set, now let’s try switching the AI back on.”

Tegan was making her way down on a ladder that ran down the side of the tall room: all of a sudden the main lighting initiated.

“Showing operational systems coming back online all over the ship, Adam are you reading me?” Lana asked with a slight air of worry in her voice.

“E.E.S. Dallas shipboard artificial intelligence network Adam active and running start up protocols, please wait…” the AI said with a flat tone to its voice, quite unlike the sweet-natured temperament of Eve, the next-generation model currently installed onboard the Venture.

“You did it Lana!” came Tegan’s voice as she came walking up to stand next to her.

“I’m not – what is it you humans say? – counting my chickens just yet,” Lana said with a slight grin on her oil-ridden face.

“Start up protocols completed, initiating… initiating… please identify yourself…”

Lana looked at Tegan with a wide-eyed glare as she spoke: “Well here it goes,” she said, “hello Adam, my name is Lana Prox, I am the senior pilot of the E.E.S. Venture, I am placing my hand on your bio chip detection port now so you can confirm my identity.” And with that she placed her delicate hand on a glass panel in the centre of the main control console in the AI computer command station.

“Verifying identity, please wait…” A couple of moments went by before the glass panel went from a translucent red to green. “Bio chip authenticated, query, my data records do not match up, I am missing one hundred and twenty-five years of information, please explain.”

Once again Lana and Tegan looked at each other; Tegan gestured for Lana to carry on. “You have been in-operational for all that time Adam. The Dallas was in a battle with the Venra Confederacy and you were lost with all hands, one hundred and twenty-five years ago, we found you and are attempting to repair you so we can take you home.”

She waited for a response. The women were met with silence for a good five-minute period before Tegan spoke: “What’s going on Lana, why isn’t he saying anything? Has he broken down again? Was the power shunt we gave the ship not enough?”

“I have no idea Commander; the control display readouts show that Adam is active and awaiting instruction, he should have responded to my explanation of events. I’m not sure why he hasn’t.”

Lana was about to start tapping away at the command console in an attempt to figure out if there was anything wrong with the AI speech subroutines when he spoke: “Playing last command order…” then the silence was broken with the sounds of a battle. Over
